The reason Books Employ such Intense Emotional Responses in readers.
The quality of books is that certain emotional connections may be established with the readers. Reading is a process that involves engagement unlike other entertainment. A reader does not just read a story, he imagines it, touches it, and lives inside it in his/her mind. The time spent investing in this can make books personal and meaningful as the emotions grow slowly and deeply.
Storytelling is one of the reasons why books take such a strong emotional attachment. Stories are natural ways that humans acquire the understanding of the world. Books give accounts of experiences in a carefully organized but open-ended form and leave readers to give their own interpretations of the emotions based on their own lives. The characters experience difficulty, development, defeat, hope, and change, all of which are the real human experiences. The fictional tales usually become emotionally real since they constitute feelings that are universal.
Imagination is another effective factor. As one reads, the mind creates faces, places, voices and emotion. This visualization of mine makes every reading experience a unique one. Two individuals can read the same book and even get emotionally attached to completely different scenes. Since the image is made in the mind, emotional reactions are closer and personal as compared to visual fixed media.
Emotional bonding is largely dependent on character identification. Readers tend to identify with some characters in them their fears, dreams, weaknesses or strengths. Empathy is developed in the process of this connection. Readers are satisfied when characters are successful. Readers feel sad or are concerned when they suffer. Characters may become familiar in a way that may be likened to emotional companions.
Even language helps in the emotional richness. Words may be sweet, fierce, dramatic or crude. Careful writing enables the emotions to develop in time and the readers have time to digest the emotions than to instant reactions. This emotional accumulation builds up in a slow manner so that it produces enduring impressions. Some of the lines or passages can be remembered by the readers even after reading the book.
Emotional safety is also offered in books. Through reading, one gets to indulge in complicated feelings -sadness, loneliness, love, fear- in a more intimate and private way. One is not pressured into responding or doing things. This renders books an effective remedy of emotional discharge and comprehension of oneself. Most of the people read books when they are unsure or in hard moments since the books are not judgmental but rather give them comfort.
Emotional attraction toward books is enhanced by memory. Books are usually linked to certain times in life; age, location or another emotion. Those feelings will resurface immediately as one re-reads a book. Books become emotional landmarks as opposed to mere stories with time.
Conclusively, books form strong emotional relationships since they talk less but say much. They merge story, imagination, language and reflection and create an experience that is personal and universal at the same time. It is this emotional connection that will keep us reading, in spite of all the digital noise that surrounds us in the world.
